Glass, Stone and Metal Decorative Mosaics

Posted by Kate Spencer on Jan 27th 2022

Glass, stone and metal decorative mosaics make a tile installation design stand out. They add visual interest, an element of bling and whimsy, not to mention that they offer you the opportunity to create a wall or backsplash design completely unique to you.

As Alena Capra mentions in Alena Capra, Interior Designer, Talks Tile and Design,

"I love that tile can be mixed and matched in so many different ways. I can take glass and stone and porcelain and create something different each time even with a tight budget. I love using tile in unconventional areas. Tile goes beyond the kitchen and bath. It's different and it protects the wall."

In this article, I introduce you to several categories of decorative mosaics available at Tile Outlets of America. What I like so much about these products is that they mix together glass, stone as well as metal to create a particularly interesting decorative effect that each one's shape highlights beautifully.

5 Types of Glass, Stone and Metal Decorative Mosaics

These five decorative mosaics are available in 1” hexagon, 2” hexagon, 2”x2” squares and 1”x4” rectangles. They are available at all three Tile Outlets of America as well as online.

1. Hexagon Glass Stone Mosaic

Hexagons are popular for adding visual interest to floors and walls. You'll find them in large formats as well as small and micro-formats.

The Living Grey 1” Hexagon Mosaic is a blend of glass, stone and metal. The colors are in the blue and grey family. You will find grey glass tiles, white glass tiles and stones in blue and grey colors. The metal accents give this mosaic extra shine.

The Tour Grey 2” Hexagon Mosaic is a combination of glass, and stone.

The light glass pieces have newsprint on the back of the glass to give you that art deco quality. The stones are wood vein grey and light emperador. The grey glass pieces have a textured look, but they are smooth on the top. The brushed metal ties together the textured glass, the stone, and the newsprint glass.

2. Glass and Stone Sticks Mosaic

Glass, stone and metal sticks look fabulous in a mosaic. When you see the term sticks, it refers to long narrow liners. You may find them in alternating widths and lengths as you see in Vespa Stormey Mosaic.

The Carrara/Blue/Glass Sticks Mosaic 12x12 illustrates how vibrant color splashes can be when you combine glass and stone. Here, the sticks are uniform in width.

Notice the difference color schemes make.  Carrara White w/Metal & Dark Glass Sticks Mosaic 12x12 captures a more monochrome vibe with the blend of metal, stone and glass.

3. Glass, Stone and Metal Puzzle & Glamour Mosaics

Let's add some glamour to the mix! Here you have  Glamour Linear Glass Mosaic and it creates a more vibrant effect with the combination of different mosaic shapes and finishes.

This next example is just as glamourous! It's a puzzle mosaic called  Kaos Silver Glass Mosaic.

You'll often find puzzle mosaics used in pool and outdoor spa installations where they capture and reflect light. This kitchen installation in metallic and glass mosaic does just that in an indoor space as a backsplash.

4. Glass, Stone Patchwork Mosaics

Patchwork tile is another style that lends itself well to mosaics, and more specifically to glass, stone and metal mosaics.

In the case of Light Grey Patchwork 2x4 Glass/Stone Mosaic 12x12, you have an Asian inspired mixture of subtle patterns that look sophisticated, contemporary, and classic.

5. Diamond and Herringbone Glass Stone Mosaics

No discussion of mosaics can be complete unless you bring up diamonds and herringbones! These are classic playful shapes that help make mosaics the ideal jewels of a design concept.

Herringbone comes to life with Cedar Beach Frosted Herringbone Mosaic 11.8 x 11.8.
