How to Choose Outdoor & Pool Tile
Outdoor tile in Florida has to handle sun, rain, humidity, and bare feet — all while looking like a natural extension of the home. Here's how our designers approach patios, lanais, and pool decks.
Grip comes first
For pool decks, patios, and any wet area, choose porcelain pavers and tile with a textured, matte, or grip-rated finish. Smaller formats and structured surfaces add traction underfoot where water collects.
Pool & waterline tile
Waterline and pool tile need to stand up to chemicals and constant moisture — glass and frost-rated porcelain mosaics are popular choices. Carry the same mosaic all the way around the waterline for a continuous band, and keep the surrounding deck in a grip-rated porcelain that stays comfortable underfoot.
Make inside and outside flow
- Carry a wood-look or stone-look porcelain from the lanai to the interior for a seamless, larger-feeling home.
- Stone-look porcelain pavers give the natural-stone aesthetic with far less maintenance and no sealing.
- Use large-format pavers for a calm, modern deck; smaller formats and pattern for character.
Built for our climate
Porcelain shrugs off humidity, fading, and freeze-thaw better than most natural stone, and needs no annual sealing. Ask any Flooring Supercenter associate which lines are rated for exterior, wet, and pool use.
Outdoor Tile FAQs
What is the best tile for a Florida patio or pool deck?
Grip-rated porcelain pavers and tile are the top choice. They handle sun, rain, and humidity without fading or sealing, and a textured or matte finish keeps wet pool decks and patios slip-resistant underfoot.
Can I use the same tile indoors and outdoors?
Often, yes — many of our wood-look and stone-look porcelains come in exterior-rated finishes, so you can carry one look from the living room to the lanai. Always confirm a line is rated for exterior and wet use; our Flooring Supercenter team can point you to the right ones.
What tile works for a swimming pool and waterline?
Pool and waterline tile need to resist pool chemicals and constant moisture. Glass and frost-rated porcelain mosaics are popular for the waterline, with a grip-rated porcelain paver or tile on the surrounding deck so it stays comfortable underfoot.
Can I see these tiles in person?
Yes — the tiles featured here are available to see at our Florida Flooring Supercenters in Fort Myers, Sarasota, or Tampa. Order samples online, or visit and our designers will help you finish the look at no charge.
